Enter Gene Haas. If you’re a machinist, you may have heard of his company, as it is currently the largest machine tool builder in the United States. In 1980, Haas owned and operated a small machine shop in California. While watching one of his employees, he realized there must be a better way to index parts. He soon developed the HBI-5C indexing head, powered by a programmable stepper motor, and in 1986, he was awarded US patent #4576530 for his design.
